Solliden Castle celebrates 120 years in 2026
Architect-designed greenhouses
Solliden Castle celebrates 120 years in 2026. A fantastic project that began in a friendship between the then Crown Princess Victoria and the doctor Axel Munthe, whose Villa San Michele was used as a model for a grandiose Italian-style villa.
Solliden is truly unique, both in its architecture and for its unique garden. King Carl XVI Gustaf has chosen Solliden's theme "Together in Time" – a theme that connects several anniversaries celebrated in 2026, but also connects to the concept of a garden – always in time, always in renewal.
The obvious centerpiece of the Jubilee Garden is the Jubilee Greenhouse., uniquely designed and created by LEFT to celebrate this royal jubilee. With its architecture, the greenhouse connects to Solliden's history and design language, while at the same time looking forward. It is a tribute to timeless design, solid craftsmanship and the enduring interaction between architecture, nature and the people who gather under its glass roof.
When you walk through the gate to Solliden Castle Park, you are greeted by a very special environment that invites you to walk and explore. The park surrounds the Royal Family's summer palace and was laid out over a hundred years ago by the then Queen Victoria. She created a garden with inspiration from many parts of the world.

Adding something new to a culturally and historically charged environment requires more than respect – it requires understanding, precision and courage. Solliden Castle, with its Italian-inspired architecture and clear idea of the good life in the landscape, carries a strong story about light, proportion and the interaction between building and nature.
The anniversary greenhouse takes its starting point precisely from this. With roots in the classic orangery tradition, but with contemporary technical and functional precision, it will be a room where utility and pleasure are combined. Here is the cultivation and botanical expertise, but here we also create a place for conversation, meals and rest. The greenhouse will thus not be an object in the garden – but an extension of life in it.
By combining the best of both worlds – the historical design language and today’s demands for function and sustainability – architecture is created that does not imitate, but continues. Our The Rose Greenhouse Collection truly comes into its own with its beautiful moldings, warm sense of proportion and superior finish.
The story of Solliden begins with the meeting between two strong personalities: Axel Munthe and Crown Princess Victoria. Their shared interest in art, architecture and landscape laid the foundation for a friendship that also came to shape the place.
Munthe, the physician and humanist, brought with him influences from Italy – not least from Villa San Michele on Capri – where architecture and nature are woven together into a whole. Crown Princess Victoria found in this a vision for Solliden: a place for recreation, light and tranquility, but also for cultivation and life.
With the help of Axel Munthe, Victoria was able to purchase building details and statues from Italy that were incorporated into the building's walls. Victoria was also a collector, not least of older tiled stoves, which are housed in large numbers inside the castle.
The architect was Torben Grut, his most famous work is the Stockholm Stadium, built for the 1912 Olympic Games. With the help of Axel Munthe, Victoria was able to purchase building details and statues from Italy that were composed into the walls of the building. Victoria was also a collector, not least of older tiled stoves, which are built up in large numbers inside the palace.
Architecture and gardens are always part of a longer story. They are shaped, used, changed – and passed on. At VANSTA there is a direct connection to this heritage through the owner and CEO Berenike Munthe, who is directly related to Axel Munthe. With the same curiosity about space, light and man’s relationship with nature, she has developed a concept where the classic greenhouse gains contemporary relevance.
"Reconnecting with classic proportions that have survived through generations is something I am passionate about in everything we do. I have had the design of this greenhouse in the back of my mind for a number of years. To be able to realize it in this particular context where we reconnect with Axel Munthe is fantastic fun," says designer and owner of Vansta, Berenike Munthe.
Contributing to Solliden's continued history is therefore more than a mission. It is a conversation across generations – where we gently add a new layer to an already rich fabric. Families come and go, but the places and ideas live on.
