Statue "The Gardener"

Regular price $1,896.00

The statue The Gardener is a true classic. This stylish gardener  who is resting for a moment on his spade to admire his handiwork. Dressed in a rustic tunic, tricorn hat, and riding breeches, The Gardener is the perfect way to celebrate the pride and joy that all gardeners feel when they see their work come to life.

On the historic estate Burton Agnes Hall in East Yorkshire stands one of garden history's more unusual figures – a stone sculpture known as "The Gardener," dated to the early 18th century. The statue depicts a life-sized gardener, dressed in period-appropriate work attire, with a spade in one hand and a tool in the other. The figure is robust and simple, with an expression that blends pride and toil – an unusual motif at a time when garden sculptures typically depicted mythological figures, nobility, or pastoral scenes.

Burton Agnes Hall, an Elizabethan manor completed in 1610, is known for its beautiful gardens, art collections, and architecture. "The Gardener" is located near the kitchen garden, suggesting that he originally had a symbolic role – to honor the working people who supported the estate's cultivation and self-sufficiency. The sculpture is believed to have been commissioned by the family that owned the estate at the time, as a form of recognition of the gardener's important role.

The unique aspect of the statue is that it depicts a real professional, not an idealized figure. This type of work portrait in stone was very rare during the 18th century, making "The Gardener" a valuable and early example of how one could acknowledge the craftsmen of garden art.

Today, the statue is somewhat weathered, but still an important part of the historical landscape of Burton Agnes Hall.It serves both as a work of art and as a reminder of the timeless connection between humans, the earth, and the garden.

You should always place your statue on a flat and durable surface. A cast base or a well-prepared paving stone works excellently.
